Dubai Fountain - Showing off

can you put your phone away?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

i think mobile phones are not good for us in relation to how it destroys communication between people when in social settings.

with the introduction of the iphone and the influx in smart phones equipped with internet and everything, i have realised people use their phones way too much. i’m sure everyone has been to a social event (a party or dinner, etc) and have one person or a few people pull out their phone and  begin messaging or facebooking or msn’ing or what ever. once one person does this, there is a slow and eventual domino effect where others will pull their phones out and do the same. now everyone is on their phone and there’s no one to talk to because everyone is now occupied. sometimes people have fun messaging each other through facebook even when they’re right in front of each other. i am guilty of that too. this cuts and stops people from talking to each other or getting used to the ability to strike a conversation during low/quiet moments when out.

this kind of behaviour is more evident when you’re with one other person. their phone goes off and they spend the next 3-5 minutes answering a message or talking to someone over the phone while you sit there having no one to talk to. think about being on the receiving end of someone on their phone, although it’s not that bothersome, it’s not that pleasant either.

if you’re at a party/dinner/outing, you’ll immediately notice who’s bored when you see a few individuals who have their heads slouched over their phone pressing buttons (or the touch screen). yes it could be important, but realistically, how many times has a message or phone call been THAT important. it’s anti-social.

i was told that it’s rude to answer a phone call or reply to an sms while with someone. while i don’t find this particularly true (especially with answering a phone call), i believe the person should at least cut it short if it’s not important. don’t have a huge conversation. if you receive a phone call, cut it short and tell them you’ll speak to them later (unless it’s actually an important call) or don’t even pick up at all. if it’s a message, i’m pretty sure it can be answered later because if it’s that urgent, they would have called you instead.

we should all stop using our phones when we’re out with friends or keep it to an absolute minimal. the more we get used to this behaviour, the more we will think it’s okay to hide behind our phones and consequently we will lose or lower our ability to communicate “properly” in social settings. the phone is the usual culprit as the interrupter when you’re chatting with someone face to face.

i’m not a nazi about not using your phone in front of me, i would just “prefer” people not to use it. everyone is guilty of it. even i am. it’s hard for some people not to pull their phone out when things start to get boring or when you get a message. messages can be answered later. i have slowly adopted the way of answering messages later but phone calls are hard to not pick up.

i think we’re starting to enjoy hiding behind our phones as it provides a good escape. it does keep us occupied. it’s the easy way out when you’re uninterested. this one one time on the train, there was this girl sitting down using her phone and i was standing up next to her. i was secretly looking at what she was doing on her phone for about a good minute and noticed that she wasn’t doing anything. as in, she was just browsing around every option on her samsung phone and pretty much doing shit all except waste her battery. i don’t fully understand why she was doing this but if she was bored, going through the menus on your phone is not really entertaining - give someone a call or something.

which brings me to another point: people (especially girls) should stop hiding behind their phones and gadgets when in public places especially on public transport. take note of your surroundings. i know girls sometimes hide behind their phones for various reasons but at least take note of who is around you and what is happening. some girls have no idea.

……… i couldn’t be bothered to finish this post. but you get the idea of what i’m trying to say: stop placing so much attention to your phone. take note of your surroundings. if you’ve ever watched the movie “wall-e”, just remember how the humans were going through their lives engulfed by technology and suddenly a few of them accidentally realise there is more out there than the gadgets they use. it’s an extreme case, but you get the drift.

music festival flyers.

Monday, October 26th, 2009

organisers of “music festivals” and organisers/promoters in general should stop with the whole grass and sky background theme for their flyers. think of something new already. this usually relates to any event that has to do with electronic music (usually electro/house) but is not limited to this. this is just as bad as how RNB/HIP-HOP clubbing flyers usually have skanky girls or girls wearing very little plastered all over the front. the sky and grass thing is over done now… including other elements like flowers, gnomes, hot air balloons, clouds… etc.

can you promoters stop making us designers create stuff that’s the same style as everything else. i guess there isn’t really a say in what a designer thinks. promoters know best right? yeah right.

i guess we’ll still be seeing this shit for a while until promoters want something new:
